Research For Prototype
We started off by going to the Science Gallery Dublin. This was one of the better one for installations. We gained a better insight into how an installation can be presented and received by an audience. We also got to experience what works and what doesn't when it comes to an interactive experience. The main installations we got inspiration from were;
After we went to the National Gallery. This did not have any audio pieces but it did have some use of lights to emphasise and ease the viewing of the stained glass. This was good to see a new way to be able to show the strong points in work by doing something so insignificant. The use of lighting can be a very powerful when displaying an artwork or piece, as it emphasises the work as highlights it's strong points.
Finally we went to Irish Museum of Modern Art [IMMA]. This was the biggest help for our research as this had multiple audio installations. We found examples of umbrella audio which was good to experience as we were talking about using this in our project. We also found regular uses of audio but found them less effective to capture your attention.
- Hello Machine - Rachel Hanlon. An interactive phone call with callers from around the world with a physical old-age telephone. This showed us how interactive pieces are more effective to a user than a 2D or representational piece.
- PillowTalk - Joanna Montgomery. Connecting two people who can't be in the same place at the same time, through their heartbeats. Using wristbands to pick up the heartbeats, transmitting it to the others pillow so they can hear it when they sleep. This showed us how effective audio can be to an experience to connect a user.
- Rest Energy - Ulay & Marina Abramovic. A video of a couple holding opposite sides of a bow and arrow, leaning backwards, causing the arrow to be drawn, creating a tension between the two as they hold it. This piece displayed how powerful audio can be used as a tool to affect the viewers emotional state, as the increase of tension, amplified by the increase in heart rate and breathing as time goes on, creating an uneasy feeling and anticipation.
